Specimen Observations
Globba winitii is a late comer in the Ginger Garden. It comes up in late May and starts blooming almost immediately. The inflorescence lasts a long time and the tiny yellow flowers come nonstop.
It is a tough little plant that takes a variety of soil types, and lighting conditions.
This Globba is also a short plant which doesn’t get above 12 inches. The undersides of the leaves are red and not as thin and delicate as the leaves on my other larger Globbas.
Not only are Globba winitii one of the last items to emerge from dormancy in my garden but they are also among the first to go dormant in October. They are spectacular performers.
Common Name: Jungle Jewels
Date Acquired: 2000-06-10
Culture:
I have grown Globba winitii in various places in the Ginger Garden. It takes a variety of lighting conditions from bright shade to afternoon sun so long as it gets enough water. I have grown it in native Houston soil and in rich prepared soil and it seems at home in each. It is watered via micro irrigation everyday while in active growth. When it goes into dormancy, I can leave them in the soil to come back next season or I can lift them to store them and divide them.
