Specimen Observations
When I first got this plant I sort of turned my nose up at it. It is now my favorite one. Its dainty bloom is irresistible. When I first planted the rhizomes I nearly yanked up the new growth thinking it was weedy grass. I am now trying to propagate this pretty thing to see if I can make a mass planting. When I have enough of them I will begin to experiment with giving them a little more sun to see if I can get increase in their height.
Common Name: Dancing Lady
Date Acquired: 2000-06-01
Culture:
I keep this globba in a large 36" high pot with other small gingers. It is in rich composted soil and I fertilize it sparingly maybe once a month. I started with two plants and now have six.
They are kept in shade with indirect light and have never grown over 8 inches in height.
The stalks bloom once and not all will produce a bloom before going dormant for the winter. I have left them outside in Zone 9, but over the last two years I have gotten into the habit of digging them up and storing them inside since they can be overrun by more vigorous plants.
The rhizomes for this plant are very small and I’m not as cavalier about dividing them as I am with larger species.
Zone: 9
Size: Less than 9 inches
Color: Yellow, Red
