Alpinia zerumbet

Specimen Observations

In Houston, Alpinia zerumbet is one of those plants that one day seems neatly nestled in a corner of your yard then BAM! It's the size of an SUV the next. It is architectural to say the least.

Common Name: Shell Ginger

Date Acquired: 1996-06-07

Culture:

Once this plant takes root in your yard you can't cant beat it back with a stick. A machete yes but not a stick.

Really, Alpinia zerumbet is an easy plant to grow here. Just make sure you have enough room for it. I give it 50% shade but I have seen it take full sun. It is well watered.

Zone: 7+

Size: 4 - 10 ft tall

Color: White, pink flowers
