In Houston, Alpinia zerumbet is one of those plants that one day seems neatly nestled in a corner of your yard then BAM! It's the size of an SUV the next. It is architectural to say the least.

Once this plant takes root in your yard you can't cant beat it back with a stick. A machete yes but not a stick.
Really, Alpinia zerumbet is an easy plant to grow here. Just make sure you have enough room for it. I give it 50% shade but I have seen it take full sun. It is well watered.
