Specimen Observations
Aristolochia gigantea can take a lot of punishment. I had it growing in a pot but I got tired of lugging it around and watering it. I finally decided to put it in the ground. A year later I decided I didn’t like the spot it was in and moved it. Aristolochia gigantea had about a seventy percent foliage die-off and came back strong. It has beautiful blooms and the foliage attracts butterflies.
Common Name: Dutchman's Pipe
Date Acquired: 2000-05-01
Culture:
Aristolochia gigantea is planted in the ground in unamended soil. It gets four to five hours of direct sun and has grown to be 20 feet long and 10 feet high along a fence in my garden. It competes well with passiflora and wisteria with occasional help from me. It blooms profusely in waves throughout spring and summer. In winter it dies back and returns quickly in the spring.
