Echinacea purpurea

Specimen Observations

Echinacea makes nifty fleshy roots that are easy to transplant and divide. The older the plant the larger the root mass. The cut flowers last a long time and can be dried to make attractive arrangements. It has a very faint scent sometimes indiscernable scent.

Common Name: Purple Cone Flower

Date Acquired: 2001-05-01

Culture:

Echinacea is in well draining sandy soil in some spots of my garden and in other spots I have it in beds of garden mix. For a while I had it in a spot that got maybe 3 hours of sun a day but it was not very happy. It would bloom late in the season and then only a few blossoms would be produced. Once I moved it to a spot with much more sun, it grew like crazy.

Zone: 3

Size: 2-3 ft

Color: Pink, Violet
