Costus speciosus

Specimen Observations

2003 is the first year Costus speciosus was grown in the Gingergarden. It has grown aggressively and bloomed prolifically. The red bracts attract hummingbirds which inspect the large, white flowers. This winter I will see how Costus speciosus fares through a zone 9 cold snap.

Common Name: Crepe Ginger

Costus speciosus is in fertile well draining soil and gets about 2 hours of direct sun. It gets bright light and shade the rest of the day. It has been fertilized with fish emulsion. It is watered daily on timed irrigation.
